February, 25th -28/13-14 Adar 5781 Erev Purim is the 13th Adar, Purim 14 Adar and Shushan Purim is on the last day ending on 15th Adar. The Book of Esther is a megillah. The whole megillah/story is read. King Ahasuerus of Persia, his new Queen Esther(hid her Jewish identity), her cousin Mordecai and the evil Haman. The holiday is celebrated by people wearing costumes and masks, using graggers(noisemakers) to drown out Haman’s name, Triangle cookies called Hamentashen are eaten. The story of Purim is known as “Megillat Esther,” or the Scroll of Esther.
Jewish people celebrate their holidays together even during dark and challenging times. Purim is a Megillah the Book of Esther is the festive holiday where we were commanded to rejoice to the fullest! We will be celebrating with a short reading of the Megillat Esther on Zoom during Shabbat Services on February26, 2021/14 Adar 5781.
