Beit Chaverim has the honor of being home to a diverse group of Jews and non-Jews who wish to gather as a community in a Jewish setting. Because of our diversity, there is an assortment of lifestyles and a variety of cultural, health, and religious observances. Due to the range of preferences, and so that all are able to partake regardless of personal dietary choices, the Religious Committee has created dietary guidelines to be upheld during Beit Chaverim events, including in-person Shabbats and holiday services.

Below is a list of the types of foods which are to be avoided. Please reach out to Rabbi Helene Ainbinder or a member of the Religious Committee if you have any questions or need clarification concerning a particular dish.

Not Permitted:

  • Pork in any form. Please be aware that pork products may be unexpectedly hidden in foods such as those containing gelatin (eg, marshmallows), so read labels carefully!
  • Shellfish: this includes oysters, clams, scallops, shrimp, lobster, etc. Seafood should be from fish which have both scales and fins; therefore, shark, mature swordfish, and catfish species are not permitted.
  • Dishes which contain meat and dairy together. We will have a table for foods containing meat, and another table for those containing dairy products.

*Note: All vegan foods, as well as eggs, honey, and fish are considered ‘parve’ and may be paired with either meat or dairy.

As we have found that our congregants very much enjoy the holiday dishes that are shared by various members during our Beit Chaverim service and social events, we wish to continue this special part for our community. To this end, it will be greatly appreciated by those who bring special dishes to provide the name of the dish and any significant ingredients such as nuts and dairy. This will allow the hospitality committee to create labels so that those with allergies or dietary restrictions are well informed and to ensure the dish is placed on the correct table. An email address of a hospitality committee member will be provided for events.

Thank you for being part of our ongoing effort to make Beit Chaverim a community that embodies respect and care for all who join us.
