DESCRIPTION:In 167 BCE\, the Maccabees led a band of Jews in a successful battle against the occupying Syrian-Greeks\, who had desecrated the Second Temple’s eternal light. Miraculously\, one day’s supply of oil lasted eight days\, until more could be found. The Chanukah menorah is lit for eight nights to celebrate that miracle. Among the many Hanukkah traditions\, children play dreidel and foods fried in oil are customary. \nCome join Beit Chaverim for a Chanukah latke party following the in person Friday Shabbat service on 12/8/23. The service will start at 7:00 pm as usual followed by latkes and dessert. The service and party will be held at The Escape at Brio\, 230 W Brio Clubhouse Dr. Washington\, UT Zoom will be available as usual.  \nIf you are a latke maker\, we invite you to bring some to share. Beit Chaverim will supply the applesauce & sour cream. If you’re more of a dessert person\, enter our Chanukah cookie contest. We will have prizes for the top two winners. Please RSVP if attending to secretary@beitchaverimutah.com. Let us know if you wish to bring latkes or dessert; also if you are participating in the cookie contest. Bring your menorah\, candles & matches from home. We will light the candles for the second night\, together. It will be a dairy lunch and we are asking for fruit\, desserts and salads. \nTold in the Book of Esther (“Megillah”) and celebrated on the holiday of Purim.  The Purim story takes place in ancient Persia following the destruction of the first Holy Temple. Wicked Haman convinces King Ahasuerus to have the Jews killed. Encouraged by her cousin Mordechai\, Queen Esther\, the king’s unwilling wife\, risks her life to intercede on her people’s behalf. The result is a stunning reversal\, which is celebrated each year on Purim.

SUMMARY:Yom Ha Atzma’ut (Israel Independence Day)
DESCRIPTION:For American Jews\, celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut has been a way to express solidarity with the state of Israel and to strengthen their alliance with it. In many communities\, it is one of few occasions in which Jewish organizations and synagogues of different ideologies and denominations cooperate in forming a common celebration. There is not yet an accepted “tradition” of how to celebrate this holiday\, and only time will tell whether certain customs\, foods\, prayers\, and melodies will be linked in the Jewish mind with this holiday\, as with holidays that emerged many centuries before Yom Ha’atzmaut. For Jews around the world\, joining with Israelis celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut has become a concrete link in the Jewish connection to the land of Israel.

DESCRIPTION:Israelis observe Yom Ha’atzmaut to commemorate the Israeli Declaration of Independence\, which was proclaimed by future Israeli prime minister David Ben-Gurion on behalf of the Yishuv on 14 May 1948.The mood outside of Ben-Gurion’s residence just prior to the announcement was joyous: The Jews of Palestine … were dancing because they were about to realize what was one of the most remarkable and inspiring achievements in human history: A people which had been exiled from its homeland two thousand years before\, which had endured countless pogroms\, expulsions\, and persecutions\, but which had refused to relinquish its identity—which had\, on the contrary\, substantially strengthened that identity; a people which only a few years before had been the victim of mankind’s largest single act of mass murder\, killing a third of the world’s Jews\, that people was returning home as sovereign citizens in their own independent state.
