SUMMARY:Yom Kippur
DESCRIPTION:This year we will again be holding our Yom Kippur services at a new holiday location. We will be meeting at the Brio Escape\, 230 W. Clubhouse Dr.\, Washington. We’re pretty excited about it and masks are optional. Service will begin at 4:00 pm followed by a break the fast buffet. We’re pretty excited about it and masks are optional. Yom Kippur\, also known as the Day of Atonement\, is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. \nThe Torah commands all Jewish adults (apart from the sick\, the elderly and women who have just given birth) to abstain from eating and drinking between sundown on the evening before Yom Kippur and nightfall the next day. The fast is believed to cleanse the body and spirit\, not to serve as a punishment. \nAccording to tradition\, God judges all creatures during the 10 Days of Awe between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur\, deciding whether they will live or die in the coming year. Jewish law teaches that God inscribes the names of the righteous in the “book of life” and condemns the wicked to death on Rosh Hashanah; people who fall between the two categories have until Yom Kippur to perform “teshuvah\,” or repentance. As a result\, observant Jews consider Yom Kippur and the days leading up to it a time for prayer\, good deeds\, reflecting on past mistakes and making amends with others.

SUMMARY:Kol Nidre
DESCRIPTION:This year we will be holding our Rosh Hashanah\, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur services at a new holiday location. We will be meeting at the Brio Escape\, 230 W. Clubhouse Dr.\, Washington. We’re pretty excited about it and masks are optional. We’re pretty excited about it as these will be our first in person services since the Covid shutdown and masks are required. Daniel Gaisford\, cellist\, will again be performing moving rendition of Kol Nidre. Kol Nidre\, (“All Vows”)\, is a prayer sung at the beginning of the service on the eve of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). The name\, derived from the opening words\, also designates the melody to which the prayer is traditionally chanted. \nThe first communal prayer service of Yom Kippur actually takes place immediately prior to sunset on the evening of Yom Kippur. This service is called Kol Nidrei (“All Vows”). These are the first words of a special legal formula that is recited at the beginning of this service and is chanted three times. This legal ritual is believed to have developed in early medieval times as a result of persecutions against the Jews. At various times in Jewish history\, Jews were forced to convert to either Christianity or Islam upon pain of death.

SUMMARY:Passover
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for Passover\, we will be using the Conklin/Fellowship Hall at the Good Shepard Presbyterian Church in St. George. Satuday April 16th. We will continue using Zoom therefore if you cannot come to the Passover service please join us on Zoom. \nAccording to the Book of Exodus\, God commands Moses to tell the Israelites to mark a lamb’s blood above their doors in order that the Angel of Death will pass over them (i.e.\, that they will not be touched by the death of the firstborn). After the death of the firstborn Pharaoh orders the Israelites to leave\, taking whatever they want\, and asks Moses to bless him in the name of the Lord. The passage goes on to state that the passover sacrifice recalls the time when the LORD “passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt”. This story is recounted at the passover meal in the form of the Haggadah\, in fulfillment of the command “And thou shalt tell (Higgadata) thy son in that day\, saying: It is because of that which the LORD did for me when I came forth out of Egypt.”
