SUMMARY:Purim
DESCRIPTION:Megillah reading & lunch Sunday March 24th @ 11:00am at  Michael & Rabbi Helene’s home. It will be a dairy lunch and we are asking for fruit\, desserts and salads. \nTold in the Book of Esther (“Megillah”) and celebrated on the holiday of Purim.  The Purim story takes place in ancient Persia following the destruction of the first Holy Temple. Wicked Haman convinces King Ahasuerus to have the Jews killed. Encouraged by her cousin Mordechai\, Queen Esther\, the king’s unwilling wife\, risks her life to intercede on her people’s behalf. The result is a stunning reversal\, which is celebrated each year on Purim.

SUMMARY:Hanukkah

The service will start at 7:00 pm as usual followed by latkes and dessert. The service and party will be held at The Escape at Brio\, 230 W Brio Clubhouse Dr. Washington\, UT Zoom will be available as usual. \nIf you are a latke maker\, we invite you to bring some to share. SUMMARY:Kol Nidre
DESCRIPTION:The first communal prayer service of Yom Kippur actually takes place immediately prior to sunset on the evening of Yom Kippur. This service is called Kol Nidrei (“All Vows”). These are the first words of a special legal formula that is recited at the beginning of this service and is chanted three times. This legal ritual is believed to have developed in early medieval times as a result of persecutions against the Jews. At various times in Jewish history\, Jews were forced to convert to either Christianity or Islam upon pain of death. Our Kol Nidre service will be at Brio Clubhouse\, 230 W Brio Clubhouse Dr. Washington\, UT.  Please RSVP to events@beitchaverimutah.org.

SUMMARY:Tashlich
DESCRIPTION:Tashlich comes from the Hebrew word meaning “to cast\,” referring to the intent to cast away our sins via this meaningful and ancient Jewish custom common to both Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities. Come join us at Fire Lake Park in Ivins.  We recite the prayers while “casting off” our sins\, represented by breadcrumbs\, into the water. We read in Micah: “You shall cast (Tashlich) all your sins into the depths of the sea” (7:19).

SUMMARY:From the Rabbi’s Study… Shabbat\, September 15/16\, 2023/Elul 29 5783/Tishrei 1 5784
DESCRIPTION:Torah: Portion and Haftarah for the First Day of Rosh HaShanah 5784 \n(Genesis 21;I Samuel 1:1-2:10) \nThis Sabbath\, the High Holiday\, is Erev Rosh HaShanah. The Shabbat candles are kindled with the blessing ending…ner shel Shabbat V’YomTov.  Around challah for this Sabbath and next week’s Sabbath is used. Instead of salt on the challah one dips the challah in honey to symbolize a sweet New Year! Apples with honey or pomegranates are eaten for this holiday\, too! \n \n     The Torah portion tells of the birth of Isaac to Abraham and Sarah. Also\, the birth of Ishmael to Hagar and Abraham becomes a wild child and a bad influence on Isaac. Sarah urges Abraham to send Ishmael and Hagar away. Abraham was at first reluctant to do this\, but he acquiesces\, receiving Divine assurance that it is for the best. Hagar and Ishmael are saved from starvation\, and Ishmael becomes a man of war. \n     The Torah contains the incident of G-d remembering Sarah as she prayed to Him for a child. Since this is one of the themes of Rosh HaShanah that of remembering\, this portion was chosen to be read. In addition Rosh HaShanah commemorates the birthday of the universe\, the birth of Isaac provides another connection to Rosh haShanah. \n     The Haftarah is taken from the Book of Samuel. The story of the birth of Samuel to Hannah. The depiction of Hannah fulfilling her vow of “lending” her son Samuel\, whose life was to be consecrated to the service of G-d. Eventually Samuel becomes a prophet and judge of the Israelites. As the Torah and Haftarah have themes of G-d’s remembering and blessings of Sarah and the birth of Isaac\, and Hannah and the birth of Samuel they are read on Rosh HaShanah. \n     Last week was the service of Selichot/Forgiveness\, this week of Rosh HaShanah is the week of remembering and blessings\, of remembering the past year and years to one of looking forward to blessings for the future. May the future bring many blessings\, much goodness and kindness\, and happiness with sweetness that overflows throughout the coming new year. \n  \nShabbat Shalom V’ L’Shanah Tovah U’Metukah/ To A Happy\, Good Sweet New Year\, \nRabbi Helene and Michael Ainbinder and the Mishpulkah/family to you and your family  \n

SUMMARY:Passover
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for Passover. Services will be held at The Escape at Brio\, 230 W. Clubhouse Dr.\, Washington on Thursday April 6th\, at 5:30 pm. If you cannot attend\, please join us on Zoom. RSVP marilyn@kanas.us. Please respond by March 23rd. You may pay online\, click ‘donation to a specific fund’ then select Holidays Fund\, Thank You! \nAccording to the Book of Exodus\, God commands Moses to tell the Israelites to mark a lamb’s blood above their doors in order that the Angel of Death will pass over them (i.e.\, that they will not be touched by the death of the firstborn). After the death of the firstborn Pharaoh orders the Israelites to leave\, taking whatever they want\, and asks Moses to bless him in the name of the Lord. The passage goes on to state that the Passover sacrifice recalls the time when the LORD “passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt”. This story is recounted at the Passover meal in the form of the Haggadah\, in fulfillment of the command “And thou shalt tell (Higgadata) thy son in that day\, saying: It is because of that which the LORD did for me when I came forth out of Egypt.” \n

SUMMARY:PURIM
DESCRIPTION:Purim is celebrated on the 14th of Adar\, March 7th (begins evening of March 6th). Purim may seem like a minor holiday\, however if one looks beneath the surface\, one discovers the serious aspects of this festival and its timeless lessons. First\, as Jews\, we must be on guard against vile rhetoric against the Jewish people and Israel. The other important lesson is that one person\, in this story a young woman named Esther\, had the ability to become a heroine\, thus saving the Jewish people of the Persian Empire. Rabbi Helene’s long lost “relative” will come to the home of Andy and Ellen Margles on Monday March 6\, at 6:30 pm to read a portion of the Megillah\, the Book of Esther\, which tells the story of Purim. Beit Chaverim invites you to come and share in the celebration. Wear costumes or masks\, if you are so inclined. RSVP ewmargles@gmail.com. Our home is in Brio; I will provide our address once I receive your RSVP.

SUMMARY:Yom Kippur
DESCRIPTION:This year we will again be holding our Yom Kippur services at a new holiday location. We will be meeting at the Brio Escape\, 230 W. Clubhouse Dr.\, Washington. We’re pretty excited about it and masks are optional. Service will begin at 4:00 pm followed by a break the fast buffet. We’re pretty excited about it and masks are optional. Yom Kippur\, also known as the Day of Atonement\, is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. \nThe Torah commands all Jewish adults (apart from the sick\, the elderly and women who have just given birth) to abstain from eating and drinking between sundown on the evening before Yom Kippur and nightfall the next day. The fast is believed to cleanse the body and spirit\, not to serve as a punishment. \nAccording to tradition\, God judges all creatures during the 10 Days of Awe between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur\, deciding whether they will live or die in the coming year. Jewish law teaches that God inscribes the names of the righteous in the “book of life” and condemns the wicked to death on Rosh Hashanah; people who fall between the two categories have until Yom Kippur to perform “teshuvah\,” or repentance. As a result\, observant Jews consider Yom Kippur and the days leading up to it a time for prayer\, good deeds\, reflecting on past mistakes and making amends with others.

SUMMARY:Kol Nidre
DESCRIPTION:This year we will be holding our Rosh Hashanah\, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur services at a new holiday location. We will be meeting at the Brio Escape\, 230 W. Clubhouse Dr.\, Washington. We’re pretty excited about it and masks are optional. We’re pretty excited about it as these will be our first in person services since the Covid shutdown and masks are required. Daniel Gaisford\, cellist\, will again be performing moving rendition of Kol Nidre. Kol Nidre\, (“All Vows”)\, is a prayer sung at the beginning of the service on the eve of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). The name\, derived from the opening words\, also designates the melody to which the prayer is traditionally chanted. \nThe first communal prayer service of Yom Kippur actually takes place immediately prior to sunset on the evening of Yom Kippur.

SUMMARY:Passover
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for Passover\, we will be using the Conklin/Fellowship Hall at the Good Shepard Presbyterian Church in St. George. Satuday April 16th. We will continue using Zoom therefore if you cannot come to the Passover service please join us on Zoom. This story is recounted at the passover meal in the form of the Haggadah\, in fulfillment of the command “And thou shalt tell (Higgadata) thy son in that day\, saying: It is because of that which the LORD did for me when I came forth out of Egypt.”
