SUMMARY:Hanukkah
DESCRIPTION:In the second century BCE\, the Holy Land was ruled by the Seleucids (Syrian-Greeks)\, who tried to force the people of Israel to accept Greek culture and beliefs instead of mitzvah observance and belief in G‑d. Against all odds\, a small band of faithful but poorly armed Jews\, led by Judah the Maccabee\, defeated one of the mightiest armies on earth\, drove the Greeks from the land\, reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and rededicated it to the service of G‑d.

SUMMARY:Simchat Torah
DESCRIPTION:Simchat Torah is about more than beginning to read the Torah all over again. It’s about the need to reexamine what we think we know\, over and over again. We celebrate another year of reading and studying Torah: the first five books of the Bible—Genesis\, Exodus\, Leviticus\, Numbers and Deuteronomy—which\, according to Jewish tradition\, were divinely revealed to Moses at Mount Sinai.

SUMMARY:Yom Kippur
DESCRIPTION:Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar\, when we fast\, pray\, seek forgiveness from G-d and our fellows\, and come closer to G-d. It is the peak of the High Holidays.  A time of introspection\, abstinence\, prayer and penitence. The story of Abraham is read\, the ram’s horn is sounded\, and special foods are prepared and shared.

SUMMARY:Torah: (Genesis 50:14-26) Haftarah: (Jonah 1-4)
DESCRIPTION:From The Rabbi’s Study…Shabbat v’Yom Kippur October 9\,10\, 2024/9\,10 Tishrei 5785 \nThis Sabbath is Yom Kippur\, even though Yom Kippur is our “Holiest” of the Jewish holidays\, it is Shabbat that is the Holiest day because it comes every WEEK! \nLight your Yahrzeit candles first\, then your Sabbath candles…end the Blessing with “Lehadlik ner shel Shabbat v’shel Yom Tov!” \nAlso\, the people that need to take medication\, water to drink\, and are pregnant are not allowed to FAST!  G-d wants people to be healthy\, and menschen (all around good persons)! \nGmar Hatimah Tovah! May you be Sealed in the Book of Life for Good! \n \n     I realize many will be attending in person for the services and some will be on Zoom. \nThe Torah Parsha (portion) has two parts\, however the one that will be read is from Genesis. It is the final moments of Joseph’s life. This beautiful and spiritual moment for Joseph and his brothers has a theme of forgiveness and continuity. Some may not remember the whole story of Joseph\, some may have seen Joseph and the technicolor coat version\, however Joseph from the beginning of his life was the favorite son of his father\, Abraham (Rachel was his mother). Parents should love all their children equally. \nIf you have not read the story of Joseph\, Yom Kippur would be a good time to read it. \nThe story in a nutshell… \nHis older brothers were jealous\, and they did not like Joseph’s visions and “tall tales” one may say. \n     The brothers throw Joseph into a pit\, and they tell their father that Joseph was killed and eaten by a lion. Abraham mourns Joseph(for 17 years)! The brothers could not bring themselves to kill him and they sell Joseph to a passing caravan of slave traders. He goes down into Egypt…17 years later there is a famine in Canaan and his brothers do not recognize Joseph (Egyptian Vizier 2nd to Pharaoh)! Keep in mind this is a short version! \n     Joseph then reveals himself to his brothers. They bring Abraham down into Egypt. Abraham dies and Joseph receives permission from the Pharaoh to bury his father in the cave of Mapalech. Joseph returns to Egypt\, and now he is dying. \n     Are the brothers afraid that Joseph did not really forgive them? If you guessed\, Yes\, you are correct. He told them that it was G-d’s intention to bring him to Egypt in order to save the Jewish people. The brothers have to ask G-d to forgive them for the evil actions they did to their brother. \n     Most good people in the ancient times lived to be 120 years old. So why is Joseph only 110 years old? G-d took away 5 years for Joseph not correcting his brothers that “Abraham was his servant!” \n     Jonah is the reluctant prophet\, and his story is the Haftarah on Yom Kippur! Another great story to read on Yom Kippur! Why would anyone try to run away from G-d? \n     On Yom Kippur Jews run towards G-d\, asking for forgiveness of all their vows\, and negative ways by promising to REPENT! \n  \nShabbat Shalom v’ Yom Tov\, \nRabbi Helene Ainbinder \n

SUMMARY:Tashlich
DESCRIPTION:The goal of Tashlich is to cast both our sins and the Heavenly prosecutor (a.k.a. the Satan) into the Heavenly sea. And when we shake our clothes after the Tashlich prayer\, this is a tangible act to achieve the spiritual goal of shaking sins from our soul. \nNeedless to say\, the physical motions near the water and fish of Tashlich are not what grant us atonement. But if we pay attention to the symbolism and apply the sincere desire to heal our relationship with G‑d as portrayed in the physical demonstrations of Tashlich\, then it serves as a crucial part in the process of repenting and returning to G‑d in purity. \nMay we all shake ourselves from sin and be signed and sealed in the Book of Life for a good and sweet new year!

SUMMARY:Shavuot
DESCRIPTION:The festival of Shavuot (or Shavuos\, in Ashkenazi usage; Shabhuʿoth in Classical and Mizrahi Hebrew Hebrew: שבועות\, lit. “Weeks”) is a Jewish holiday that occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan (late May or early June). Shavuot commemorates the anniversary of the day G-d gave the Torah to the entire Israelite nation assembled at Mount Sinai\, although the association between the giving of the Torah (Matan Torah) and Shavuot is not explicit in the Biblical text. The holiday is one of the Shalosh Regalim\, the three Biblical pilgrimage festivals. It marks the conclusion of the Counting of the Omer.

SUMMARY:Lag Baomer
DESCRIPTION:Lag BaOmer\, also Lag B’Omer or Lag LaOmer\, is a Jewish religious holiday celebrated on the 33rd day of the Counting of the Omer\, which occurs on the 18th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar. The holiday celebrates a break in a plague that is said to have occurred during the days of Rabbi Akiva. The Talmud states that the great teacher of Jewish mysticism Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai died on Lag B’Omer\, and in modern times the holiday has come to symbolize the resilience of the Jewish spirit.

SUMMARY:Israel Independence day
DESCRIPTION:Israelis observe Yom Ha’atzmaut to commemorate the Israeli Declaration of Independence\, which was proclaimed by future Israeli prime minister David Ben-Gurion on behalf of the Yishuv on 14 May 1948.The mood outside of Ben-Gurion’s residence just prior to the announcement was joyous: The Jews of Palestine … were dancing because they were about to realize what was one of the most remarkable and inspiring achievements in human history: A people which had been exiled from its homeland two thousand years before\, which had endured countless pogroms\, expulsions\, and persecutions\, but which had refused to relinquish its identity—which had\, on the contrary\, substantially strengthened that identity; a people which only a few years before had been the victim of mankind’s largest single act of mass murder\, killing a third of the world’s Jews\, that people was returning home as sovereign citizens in their own independent state.

SUMMARY:From the Rabbi’s Study… Shabbat\, September 15/16\, 2023/Elul 29 5783/Tishrei 1 5784
DESCRIPTION:Torah: Portion and Haftarah for the First Day of Rosh HaShanah 5784 \n(Genesis 21;I Samuel 1:1-2:10) \nThis Sabbath\, the High Holiday\, is Erev Rosh HaShanah. The Shabbat candles are kindled with the blessing ending…ner shel Shabbat V’YomTov.  Around challah for this Sabbath and next week’s Sabbath is used. Instead of salt on the challah one dips the challah in honey to symbolize a sweet New Year! Apples with honey or pomegranates are eaten for this holiday\, too! \n \n     The Torah portion tells of the birth of Isaac to Abraham and Sarah. Also\, the birth of Ishmael to Hagar and Abraham becomes a wild child and a bad influence on Isaac. Sarah urges Abraham to send Ishmael and Hagar away. Abraham was at first reluctant to do this\, but he acquiesces\, receiving Divine assurance that it is for the best. Hagar and Ishmael are saved from starvation\, and Ishmael becomes a man of war. \n     The Torah contains the incident of G-d remembering Sarah as she prayed to Him for a child. Since this is one of the themes of Rosh HaShanah that of remembering\, this portion was chosen to be read. In addition Rosh HaShanah commemorates the birthday of the universe\, the birth of Isaac provides another connection to Rosh haShanah. \n     The Haftarah is taken from the Book of Samuel. The story of the birth of Samuel to Hannah. The depiction of Hannah fulfilling her vow of “lending” her son Samuel\, whose life was to be consecrated to the service of G-d. Eventually Samuel becomes a prophet and judge of the Israelites. As the Torah and Haftarah have themes of G-d’s remembering and blessings of Sarah and the birth of Isaac\, and Hannah and the birth of Samuel they are read on Rosh HaShanah. \n     Last week was the service of Selichot/Forgiveness\, this week of Rosh HaShanah is the week of remembering and blessings\, of remembering the past year and years to one of looking forward to blessings for the future. May the future bring many blessings\, much goodness and kindness\, and happiness with sweetness that overflows throughout the coming new year. \n  \nShabbat Shalom V’ L’Shanah Tovah U’Metukah/ To A Happy\, Good Sweet New Year\, \nRabbi Helene and Michael Ainbinder and the Mishpulkah/family to you and your family  \n

After the death of the firstborn Pharaoh orders the Israelites to leave\, taking whatever they want\, and asks Moses to bless him in the name of the Lord. SUMMARY:PURIM
DESCRIPTION:Purim is celebrated on the 14th of Adar\, March 7th (begins evening of March 6th). Purim may seem like a minor holiday\, however if one looks beneath the surface\, one discovers the serious aspects of this festival and its timeless lessons. First\, as Jews\, we must be on guard against vile rhetoric against the Jewish people and Israel. The other important lesson is that one person\, in this story a young woman named Esther\, had the ability to become a heroine\, thus saving the Jewish people of the Persian Empire. Rabbi Helene’s long lost “relative” will come to the home of Andy and Ellen Margles on Monday March 6\, at 6:30 pm to read a portion of the Megillah\, the Book of Esther\, which tells the story of Purim. Beit Chaverim invites you to come and share in the celebration. Wear costumes or masks\, if you are so inclined. RSVP ewmargles@gmail.com. Our home is in Brio; I will provide our address once I receive your RSVP.

SUMMARY:Yom Kippur
DESCRIPTION:This year we will again be holding our Yom Kippur services at a new holiday location. We will be meeting at the Brio Escape\, 230 W. Clubhouse Dr.\, Washington. We’re pretty excited about it and masks are optional. Service will begin at 4:00 pm followed by a break the fast buffet. We’re pretty excited about it and masks are optional. Yom Kippur\, also known as the Day of Atonement\, is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. \nThe Torah commands all Jewish adults (apart from the sick\, the elderly and women who have just given birth) to abstain from eating and drinking between sundown on the evening before Yom Kippur and nightfall the next day. The fast is believed to cleanse the body and spirit\, not to serve as a punishment. \nAccording to tradition\, God judges all creatures during the 10 Days of Awe between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur\, deciding whether they will live or die in the coming year. Jewish law teaches that God inscribes the names of the righteous in the “book of life” and condemns the wicked to death on Rosh Hashanah; people who fall between the two categories have until Yom Kippur to perform “teshuvah\,” or repentance. As a result\, observant Jews consider Yom Kippur and the days leading up to it a time for prayer\, good deeds\, reflecting on past mistakes and making amends with others.
